El Puente - The Bridge

FOOD PROGRAM

We encounter people who simply need help with food. Some of these are the "Ancient Ones", old people who are no longer capable of working. Some are families in the Microloan or School programs. Rather than turn them away, as is common practice among other sources, we chose to implement a program to help. We serve a healthy meal of soup, fruit, crackers, coffee, and juice on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday . Qualifying families are eligible to work for a bag of food. Families in crisis may receive a free bag of food, at the sole discretion of The Bridge team.

Nanci is showing a Bribri mom the starter boxes for vegetables as she explains the process of growing  them

We have begun an informal program to teach the people who come to The Bridge how to grow their own vegetables. The purpose is to pass along the skills leading to self-sufficiency. Like our other programs, this is evolving as we go. As we learn what is needed, and find people who can show us what we need to know, we pass it along to the families who come here.
